OSU-OKC YDs host successful bake sale to benefit veteran's families

Fellow YDO Members-

Thank you very much for all of your support over the past few weeks in regards to promoting, baking, and contributing to our bake sale for military families.  Up to this point we have received $760.01!!  We would like to thank Billy Coyle, Brittany Novotny, and Dana Orwig [who made time to come out to campus to meet and greet with our students].  We would also like to thank the Jari Askins, Tom Guild, and Jim Priest campaigns for giving us literature to pass out during the bake sale.  Overall we are very pleased with the turn out, and we plan to do this again either the 2nd or 3rd week of next semester. Lastly, thank you to The Fisher House for allowing us to do this fundraiser in their name!

Thank you,
OSU-OKC YDs

April 19, 1995 - 15 Years Later

On April 19th, 1995 at 9:02am, 168 Total lives were taken from this earth too soon..

On April 19th, 1995 at 9:02am, 19 children under 6 years old would cease to grow any longer..

On April 19th, 1995 at 9:02am, Oklahoma City would never be the same!!

On this solemn day, At 9:02am, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Downtown Oklahoma City was the victim of a major terrorist attack that ripped through the hearts of all Americans. No matter where you go in the State of Oklahoma, any Oklahoman can tell you the details of their life on the day of April 19th, 1995.This attack (known at that time as the Largest Terrorist Attack on American Soil), holds a touching in my heart for a few reasons. For me, it was my 12th Birthday, and my most sadden one.

Of those 168 lives taken, my aunt (Andrea Yvette Blanton) was killed. She was a 33 year old Secretary that worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I will not go into the details how she died specifically in the blast, but her death shook my family, and produced sorrow equally shared by 167 other families. FOREVER!

15 years later, on April 19th,2010 (the day of my 27th Birthday), I ask you to join me in honoring the memory of those like my aunt Andrea who were taken from this earth too soon.As you go about this day, please take a moment to pause and appreciate the life you have, and those whom you love. Terror is strong and last for a time, but LOVE is STRONGER and will last FOREVER!

In Memory of Those We Lost,

Mr. Jonathan C. Still

Vice President of Membership- Young Democrats of Oklahoma

Secretary- Oklahoma 5th Congressional District Democrats

Secretary/Treasurer- Young Democrats of America Minority Caucus

YDO Mourns Passing Of Mankiller

Wilma Mankiller, first woman principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, pioneer for American Indian rights died Tuesday. She was 64.

“I grew up aspiring to be like Wilma Mankiller,” said Summer Shije,
state treasurer of Young Democrats and member of the Cherokee Nation.
“She fought for the rights of the Cherokee people and helped to
strengthen tribal relations with the state of Oklahoma. Wilma
Mankiller was a leader to the Cherokee people and to the state. The
world truly lost one of its leaders.”

Her death comes after her husband last month confirmed Mankiller had
stage 4-pancreatic cancer according to the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper.

"I decided to issue this statement because I want my family and
friends to know that I am mentally and spiritually prepared for this
journey, a journey that all human beings will take at one time or
another," she wrote. "It's been my privilege to meet and be touched by
thousands of people in my life, and I regret not being able to deliver
this message personally to so many of you."

Mankiller served as principal chief from 1985 until retiring in 1995.

During her time as Principal Chief she created programs that are
still effective within tribal nations today.

“Her work for Native American cultural preservation and the women’s
rights movement will not be forgotten,” said Kristen Gadlin, chair of
the YDO women’s caucus.

In 1998, President Clinton awarded Mankiller the Presidential Medal of
Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the
Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds in Tahlequah according to reports.

Feel free to share how Wilma Mankiller impacted your life below.
